A controversial decision at the most recent M-1 event in Russia may be overturned soon. In an interview with Team Bombsquad manager Ryan Ciotoli, Mac’s MMA has learned that M-1 intends to reverse the controversial decision in this past weekend’s fight between Pat Bennett and Russian rising star Alexander Volkov at M-1 Challenge XXII. The judges at the Moscow, Russia event declared the fight a draw, a decision at odds with most who watched it including Bennett’s manager. “He clearly won all three rounds,” said Ciotoli, “Pat was on top of [Volkov] for 18 minutes of the fight.” He added, “I have nothing against [Volkov] but he maybe landed two or three effective strikes the whole fight.”

Despite what appeared to everyone (except the Russian judges) as a clear win for Bennett after the official three rounds, the judges inexplicably decided a fourth round was necessary. “A fourth round was never agreed to in the contract,” explained Ciotoli. “But if you’re going to make the fighters go an extra round, and Pat dominates that last round, at least give him the win.”

Ciotoli wanted to be clear that M-1 was just as upset and embarrassed by the decision as he was, and were doing everything to make it right. “Those guys [M-1] have been great about it. They said once they receive our protest letter they will change it to a win for Pat on the record books.” According to Ciotoli it would be the right thing to do as this was, in his opinion, “the worst decision I’ve ever seen in a mixed martial arts event.”
